Mental Health & Emotional Support

🧘
RESMA — Affirming Therapists

The Red de Salud Afirmativa is a network of mental health professionals who have explicitly committed to affirming care for LGBTQ+ people. They will not pathologise your sexual orientation or gender identity. Find the full directory at masigualdad.pe.

📞
MINSA Mental Health Line

Peru's national mental health hotline. Call 113 and press option 5 for mental health support. Free, available nationwide, confidential. This is not specifically LGBTQ+ but is a real, staffed crisis line operated by the Ministry of Health.

💬
MHOL Direct Support

MHOL staff can connect you to LGBTQ+-affirming counsellors and community support, especially if you are dealing with family rejection, workplace discrimination, or violence.

⚠️ On conversion practices
Conversion therapy — attempts to change someone's sexual orientation or gender identity through psychological or religious interventions — is harmful and has been condemned by every major medical and psychiatric body worldwide. RESMA providers explicitly refuse to practice it. If a health professional suggests it, contact PROMSEX or Más Igualdad for support.

Know Your Legal Rights in Peru

What is legal

Same-sex relationships between consenting adults are fully legal. Anti-discrimination law (Decree Nº 1323, 2017) prohibits discrimination and hate crimes based on sexual orientation and gender identity — though Congress tried to repeal this in 2017. LGBTQ+ people can serve openly in the military and police.

What is not yet legal

Same-sex marriage is not recognised. Civil unions have been rejected by Congress three consecutive sessions. Same-sex adoption is not permitted. Gender-neutral language in schools was banned under Law 32,003 (2024). Trans bathroom access was restricted under Law 32,331 (2025).

⚠️
If you face discrimination

Discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity is technically prohibited. Document the incident, get names and details if possible, and contact PROMSEX for legal guidance. They have experience taking discrimination cases to court and can advise on your specific situation.

Gender Affirmation & Transition in Peru

The path to legal gender recognition and medical transition in Peru is difficult and poorly documented. This is what is actually known — and who can help you navigate it.

📌 This information can change
Peru's legal and political situation for LGBTQ+ rights is fast-moving and often hostile. Laws cited here are current as of March 2026.
